Nesting Boxes

nesting-box-photos Thanks Xander for the great news – Pink and grey galahs have made a home in Nesting Box 5 !  Watch carefully to see whether you think the eggs have hatched yet. If you see anything interesting please write it into the book in the library – by the door – (it is there for children and adults to use so please write or draw as you wish).  It is simply any observations in chronological order.  If you get any good photos or video clips please send them to the post and / or stick them in the book.

Bush Club

We need you!  I encourage you to come along just once.  I can make a time to suit you. We have binoculars, so can keep the children busy bird watching and flower spotting! Here is a Pink Fairy, The Albino Pink Fairy and a Granny’s Bonnet.  Some people are not aware that wildflowers do not last when picked and do not grow when dug up.  It is illegal to pick wildflowers, so please be sure that your children know this. I will be in the bush this Saturday from 9am till 12. On Tuesday 27th at 8:30, I am meeting … Continue reading Bush Club

Bush Club – Vandalism

Here is some of the food for our bush creatures, I took these photos today.  Many of the plants we put around the edges are now thriving – well done team! Coming up:  bird watching (we now have binoculars) seed collecting (it’s important to plant from our own stock) weeding and rubbish collection sign making We have a problem with vandalism being: bike tracks, the fence has been cut again, cubbies, litter, picking & digging up plants and general tramping over plants off the track.  The other problem is weeds taking over.  These should come out before they drop their … Continue reading Bush Club – Vandalism

bush club weeding

This is a Flinders Ranges Wattle and it is a weed.  Thanks for your help to remove these team!    Can you believe that someone has chopped a candlestick banksia tree down?  It seems that it was growing across the track where the bikes go. On a brighter note, the bush seems to be re-generating because of the fence and we have about a 70% success rate in our planted seedlings. Please get in touch if you are interested in spending time to help the bush. pam.algar@education.wa.edu.au

Bush care

I’ll be going in to weed and check over the bush probably on Wednesday 6th July.  Let me know if you are interested in helping out as my time is flexible.  It is important to get the weeds before they seed. I’d like children to collect seed pods for propagating too. Pam.algar@education.wa.edu.au

Alfreton grass spraying

The Alfreton reserve will be sprayed this weekend. The City use Leopard 200, active herbicide is Quizalofop-p- ethyl 200 g/L for grass spraying in bushland. This is the only way to keep down the invasive weeds to keep some of the native plants growing.

Kaarakin visit THANKS

Harmony the black cockatoo from Kaarakin. Many thanks to everyone who chipped in to support the Kaarakin rescue centre.  The two beautiful parrots and the two volunteers were well received by the children and many intelligent questions were answered.  It was obvious that children had been well prepared by their teachers.

H.O.P.E. Bush Club help needed

Grey Fantale – Alfreton bush June 2016  photo: Marg Owen   Marg came to speak about the black cockatoos, free of charge, on behalf of the Urban Bush Council.  Thanks Marg. http://www.bushlandperth.org.au If you are a keen adult, I could use some help in organizing and collecting the permission notes for the next Bush Club. Here is the plan but it can’t happen without some parent support. If you would like to spend an hour in the bush, come along after school (date to be decided, possibly Monday 8th August).  We can have some apples and crackers available or children can … Continue reading H.O.P.E.
